A Study of the Life History of Microphallus

چکیده
Metacercariae of the micropha\lid trematode Microphallus paragrapsi Smith 1983 were found in r.he nervous system of the smooth pebble crab Philyra laevis (Bell 1855). Sporocysts of M. paragrapsi were found in the hepatopancreas of the intertidal gastropod Assiminea brazieri (Tenison Woods 1876). Under laboratory conditions, cercariae were found to emerge from the snail host and invade the intertidal crab P, iaevis, where they subsequently encysted within the nerves innervating the legs and claws. Adults of M. para/irapsi were found in the gut of the Pacific gull Lams pacificus (Latham 18(1). The life history of M. paragrapsi is very similar to the life history of the related species Microphallus pachygrapsi Deblock & Prevo! 1969.

Intra- and interspecific competition among helminth parasites: effects on Coitocaecum parvum life history strategy, size and fecundity.
Larval helminths often share intermediate hosts with other individuals of the same or different species. Competition for resources and/or conflicts over transmission routes are likely to influence both the association patterns between species and the life history strategies of each individual. Parasites sharing common intermediate hosts may have evolved ways to avoid or associate with other spe...

متن کاملA new species of Microphallus (Trematoda: Microphallidae) from Venezuela.
During 1997-1999, a total of 94 crabs, Uca rapax were collected from La Sabana, La Ceiba and El Paujil, Sucre State, Venezuela. Of these 36 were infected with metacercariae. Two parasites were located in the abdominal muscles and one under the tissue of carapace and gonad. These metacercariae grew to adults in the following genera: Levinseniella, Microphallus and Maritrema, in the period of 2-5...
متن کاملSpatial covariation between infection levels and intermediate host densities in two trematode species.
Both theoretical arguments and empirical evidence suggest that parasite transmission depends on host density. In helminths with complex life cycles, however, it is not clear which host, if any, is the most important. Here, the relationships between the abundance of metacercariae in second intermediate hosts, and the local density of both the first and second intermediate hosts of two trematode ...
متن کاملParasite-induced change in host behavior of a freshwater snail: parasitic manipulation or byproduct of infection?
Host behavioral changes due to parasitism are often assumed to be adaptations of the parasite. However, behavioral effects of parasites may be a generalized response to parasitism and only coincidentally beneficial for parasite transmission. For this reason, alternatives to the manipulation hypothesis should be tested. Previous work demonstrated that the trematode parasite Microphallus sp. infl...
